New Sanctuary Coalition runs a weekly remote clinic staffed by non-attorney volunteers and supervised by experienced immigrants rights organizers and immigration lawyers. The clinic helps people identify ways to get relief from deportation and detention; access other immigration-related benefits; understand their rights so they can fight their own case; apply for asylum; prepare for court appearances or interviews; and much more. Our main clinic takes place on Wednesday evenings 6:00pm-9:30pm. A smaller daytime clinic runs on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons 12:00pm-4:00pm.
We're seeing tremendous growth in the number of immigrants — the people we call “Friends,” not clients — seeking help and we're looking for new volunteers. (While we especially need fluent Spanish speakers & people who are comfortable with Zoom/messaging platforms/pdfs, all are welcome). This training will provide an introduction to New Sanctuary, an overview of pro se clinic policies and procedures, and specific information on volunteer roles.
A few important guidelines:
- All clinic volunteers must be trained before they participate in clinic.
- Remote clinic is held over Zoom (interpreters also may use WhatsApp) so you must be willing and able to use these platforms.
-
Please note that we can only onboard 10-12 new volunteers each week across the daytime and evening clinics, in order to ensure that Friends have enough experienced volunteers on their teams. With 150+ people expected to register for this training, we ask that you understand it may be several weeks before you are able to join a clinic team.
